TimberTech composite decking is made from a blend of recycled wood fibers and plastics, often with a protective polymer cap. It’s designed to mimic the look of natural wood while offering durability and low maintenance. But even the toughest surfaces need a little TLC.
Whether you’re preparing for a summer barbecue or just doing some seasonal upkeep, here’s how to clean TimberTech Composite Decking.
Composite decking is resistant to rot, splintering, and insect damage, but it’s not immune to dirt, pollen, mildew and everyday grime. Regular cleaning not only preserves its appearance but also helps prevent long-term staining and surface buildup.
Before you get started, gather the following supplies:
Tip: Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or acetone, and never use metal brushes that could damage the deck surface.
Remove furniture, planters, rugs and other items from your deck. Sweep off leaves, sticks, dirt and other loose debris. This ensures you’ll be able to reach every little spot on your deck during cleaning.
Use water (hose or power washer) to rinse off the surface. Use gentle pressure during the rinsing stage – power washers should be set to a maximum of 1500 psi to avoid damaging the surface. Always spray with the grain of the board to avoid damage.
You can use TimberTech’s proprietary DeckCleaner, which is designed specifically for composite materials. Start by shaking it well and diluting it following the instructions on the label.
It’s also generally safe to use dish soap and water. Before using other cleaners, check with the manufacturer for compatibility or effectiveness prior to use.
After preparing your cleaning solution, divide your deck into manageable sections. Work on one section at a time to prevent the cleaning product from drying too quickly.
Thoroughly wet the first section with the diluted cleaner and let it sit for 30-60 seconds. It’s crucial to scrub and rinse before the cleaner dries, as dried residue can be difficult to remove.
Dip your soft-bristle brush (we recommend a medium stiffness nylon bristle deck brush) into the cleaning solution and scrub the deck gently. Using firm downward pressure, scrub the decking in both directions, with the grain, and across the grain so that the bristles of the brush are worked into the texture of the deck boards.
Keep your sections wet with cleaner until the area has been completely scrubbed. Be sure to thoroughly rinse immediately after scrubbing.
If the cleaner does dry to the deck, a white film may occur and you may need to clean again more than once to remove.
Once you’ve scrubbed the entire area, rinse the deck thoroughly to remove any soap or residue.
You can use a garden hose or power washer. We recommend a fan tip nozzle (remember, maximum pressure of 1,500 psi) and be sure to take proper safety precautions.
Once you’re done cleaning and rinsing, dry the deck surface to remove any standing water and reveal any spots you might have missed. If spots were missed, spot clean as needed.
We recommend using cotton terry cloths, a sponge mop, or a leaf blower, going in the direction of the grain, if possible.
